  What is Yoga?

Yoga is for everyone. Yoga postures work on flexibility through controlled stretching as well as building core body strength to improve posture, tone the muscles and protect the spine. Yoga is practised with awareness of the body, making it a healthy way to exercise, even when there has been an illness or injury. Our teachers can modify postures for you and offer alternatives: providing a challenge for all levels of fitness and flexibility.

Unlike other forms of exercise, there is also time for relaxation, so the body can reap the rewards of the work done. You will learn how to relax and experience moments of true peace and calm.

Our teaching is inspired by the high professional standards of the BWY (British Wheel of Yoga). There is an emphasis on correct positioning and postural alignment. This ensures safe practice and energises the body, giving maximum benefit to all the body systems. We are also influenced by the Satyananda school, where breath and movement are integrated, allowing body and mind to come to a point of stillness.

You don't need to be flexible to take up yoga, and you can practice yoga to complement other sports. Whether you spend too much time at the computer, or your body is feeling the stresses and strain of a hectic lifestyle, yoga can energise, refresh and bring balance.

  Hatha Yoga

There are many different schools of yoga, but most of the yoga practised in the West is Hatha Yoga. Hatha yoga emphasises postures (asanas) and breathing (pranayama). Traditionally hatha leads to other yoga practices such as meditation.

The ancient Sanskrit word 'yoga' means 'union', and 'hatha' is made up of two words meaning 'sun' and 'moon'. Hatha yoga is therefore a joining of opposites. In the ancient texts, the sun represents physical activity, heat and male vitality, the moon represents cool introspection and female intuition. The aim of hatha yoga is to integrate different aspects of the mind and body to bring harmony.
